General information about the Trapdoor Rifle / Carabine
The Springfield Trapdoor is a cartridge rifle and is designed for the .50-70 and later the .45-70 cartridge. The Rifle was introduced for military use. The early Springfield trapdoor were Allin-conversions of the Muzzle-loaded predecessors of the trapdoor. The action consists out a breechblock wich closed the chamber. In the breechblock is a drilled hole from the back to the front to hold the firingpin. The hammer is an external type at the side of the lockplate wich hits the firingpin at the back of the breechblock.

The Cartridge consists of a copper case containing 55 grains of musket powder and a lubricated hollow-base lead bullet weighing 405 grains. The muzzle velocity is 1100 feet/s. The accuracy is about 1.7 inch deviation at 100 yards tru 26 inch deviation at 900 yards.

The Cartridge consists of a copper case containing 70 grains of musket powder and a lubricated lead bullet weighing 500 grains. The muzzle velocity is 1315.7 feet/s.The accuracy is about 1.3 inch deviation at 100 yards tru 21.4 inch deviation at 1000 yards.
